Remember to water daily <or as needed> with a hose for the first two weeks with new plantings or when transplanting. Your sprinkler system will not provide enough water in those first two weeks even if you run it every day. Sprinkler systems should only be used to water in new lawns and even then you should hand water any areas that aren't receiving enough water. By hand watering you give your new plants a better start and also are immediately aware of any problems that should arise.
Be sure you can see the original soil that was in the pot when you purchased the plant after you've planted it. It should be planted above your exiting soil. 1/4 inch for small plants and up to one inch for very large plants or trees. Planting too deep can smother the root system and kill the plant. If it doesn't look the same or better within the first few days, replant it. Soil conditions, air pockets, lack of water and planting level or too deep are the most common planting problems. Adding potting soil to very dry sandy areas helps to maintain
moisture.
